This is a video of Janel Jasper and Jon Jasper's Manatee Tour on November 28, 2011 with Birds Underwater in Crystal River, Florida. The video is a product fom Birds Underwater.
Manatees are amazing animals. They are all incredibly gentle which is a good thing considering their large size. They measure up to 13 feet (4.0 meters) long, weigh as much as 1,300 pounds (590 kg). They are don't act threathened by humans, however, even though you can see in the video that many have scars from boat props. Half of a manatee's day is spent sleeping in the water, surfacing for air regularly at intervals no greater than 20 minutes. Manatees spend most of the rest of the time grazing in shallow waters at depths of 3.3–6.6 ft (1 to 3 meters). The Florida subspecies (T. m. latirostris), as seen in the video, has been known to live up to 60 years.
The official "season" for Florida Manatee is October 30th to March 31st. But there are manatees that stay in certain areas all year. In warmer months manatees spend most of their time at sea and out of harm's way, but from October 31st to March 31st, the colder weather drives them inland to places where can find warm water such as Floridian warm springs.
The Florida Manatee is listed as an endangered species. There are an estimated 3,000 Florida Manatees currently. Florida's Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, as seen in the video, supports the largest concentration.
